Trevi fountain

Quite possibly the most famous fountain in all of Italy, the Trevi fountain is actually fairly new by Roman standards. Completed in 1762, the site originally marked the terminus of one of Rome’s great aquaducts, the Aqua Virgo that was built in 19 BC.

The central figure of the fountain is the god of the sea, Neptune. Flanking him on the lower levels are two Tritons leading seahorses, one docile and one rather unruly, depicting the contrasting moods of the sea.
