Sumo keiko 相撲の稽古

January 27, 2009

As a fan of sumo wrestling, one of the things I really wanted to do when I was in Tokyo was to go to a morning practice at one of the sumo stables.  I searched out one of the foreign writers of the Japan Times newspaper who writes a sumo column as well as writes for Sumo Fan magazine; Mark Buckton.

Not all the heya are friendly to foreigners but with Mark’s help we headed to Kasugano-beya, one of the most established stables in sumo.  They have in fact produced many high-ranking rikishi (wrestlers) including yokozuna (grand champions).  It was a great experience that I hope to experience again.

Sorry for the late reply. Seeing the asa-geiko is very interesting, isn’t it? I didn’t know that there were any heya in Osaka. I will have to check into it the next time I’m in Osaka.
