Old Japan 古日本

June 27, 2008

Here’s a fabulous site by Dutch photographer Kjeld Duits which satisfies my desire for Japan, history and photography all in one.  The fairly self-explanatory title is “Old Pictures of Japan” and it provides photos from the Meiji (1868-1912), Taisho (1912-1926) and Showa (1926-1989) periods. What makes this site extra interesting is that it also provides the background behind the photos which has obviously been well researched.

I browsed through some of the photos of Kyoto and Osaka and was really interested to see some of the places I’ve been to and have actually taken my own pictures in the same spots.  A hell of a lot different now versus then.
