Expensive lesson 高い教訓
The omniscient “they” say that experience costs money. Well, that was certainly the case after a hike a group of us did on Sunday.
We had been talking about doing this particular hike for over a year – the Pat Sin Leng leg of the Wilson trail following a ridge of mountains that overlooks both the mainland and most of the New Territories. We checked the weather reports and there was an indication that there might be some showers but that’s about all.
About an hour into a five hour hike, the clouds, complete with thunder and lightning rolled in and it began to rain. Showers my ass! By this point we were almost to the first of many peaks and really no point in turning around. Over the next couple of hours it alternated between pelting down and letting up. We were all soaked completely to the skin and the only plus was that it wasn’t cold out.
Here’s where the cost comes in. Because of being completely water logged, between the five of us we lost a phone, an iPod, three cameras and two lenses. My camera and lens will now make lovely paperweights. What’s extra galling is that had this been Canada, I would’ve packed for this possibility but I take a look at the mole hills they call mountains here and don’t really think about it. I certainly will next time.
Trying to look on the bright side though, it really was a nice hike.
