Kansai 関西

April 20, 2008

I really love the Kansai region of Japan. There is so much history in the area. Nara, Kyoto and Osaka have all had turns at being the capitol city of Japan at one point in history.

One of the aspects of all the major cities of Kansai is that they all have a distinct feel and attitude to them. Nara is most certainly the elder statesman of the group; wise and stoic. Kyoto is the refined older lady while Kobe is the somewhat elegant yet somewhat snooty woman at the party. Despite their sizes, Himeji and Wakayama are certainly the country bumpkins of the family. And Osaka…

Osaka is one of my favourite cities and as a member of the Kansai family it is most certainly the brash youngster, a bit of a black sheep. Despite the fact that I have friends who live there, it is certainly the city that I would go back to live in. It has everything you could want and is central to all the other places of interest in the Kansai region. It’s like a mini Tokyo only with far more character. It’s friendly, it’s brash and the Osaka grandmothers have a reputation that is not to be trifled with.
