A different side of Hong Kong

November 29, 2007

Greater Hong Kong is much more than merely the downtown financial area of the island. There are the New Territories in the North (out where I live) and there are dozens of outlying islands. On Sunday, I went with a friend out to one of the larger ones, Cheung Chau.

Cheung Chau actually has a very long history primarily as a fishing village and is also home to the Cheung Chau bun festival. A very detailed history of both the island and the bun festival can be found here (sorry, only in English and Chinese)

The weather was great, we walked through the village and saw a different part of Hong Kong – a much more laid back part. Visited temples, had a relaxing time at the beach and watched the old folks hanging out checking to see what the folks invading their tranquillity were up to.
