Great Happiness Space

July 14, 2007

I discovered this documentary recently: “Great Happiness Space”.

A lot of people have heard of ‘hostess clubs’ but not too many know that there are actually ‘host clubs’ as well. It’s a long movie at 75 minutes but definitely worth a look as it gives a new perspective on a relatively unknown sector of Osaka society. What makes this film interesting for me is that having lived in Osaka, I know this area of town and have seen these guys trying to pick up clients. Believe it or not, the entertainment area that is the focus of this film has a 300 year old history. The funny thing is that it’s also right next to one of the most popular tourist areas in Osaka yet most tourists have no idea what kind of life comes out at night.

It’s in Japanese with English subtitles so if you’ve got the time, check it out.
